Open Stake  3RD October 2025 held at Danby Moor Yorkshire

By kind permission of Lord Dawney.

Judges – Mrs C Kimberley AP 3622 & Ms D Elrington BP 4005

A dry day throughout the time of the trial with a strong wind, scenting conditions seemed to vary throughout . The ground was the most fabulous grouse moor. Wind was in the main a head with occasional cheek.

We had a full card compromising of HV, GSP, HWV, GWP, Weimaraner & Brittany.

2nd – Sutchest Schwartz Hugo , GSP Owned & Handled by Mr L Loveridge.

This dog was brought up for its first run to complete a blind retrieve approx. 20 yards which was completed with  minimal handling to hand. The dog was then ran into a head wind which it seemed to take a while for the dog to settle being handled to cover the guns but when it did so it did with style and pace, the dog indicated there was game to the right of the far right hand side gun. A grouse lifted and a hare went past the dog at the same time. The dog was steady . The grouse had been shot unseen by the dog or handler. The dog was asked to retrieve this bird which was achieved with some handling.

On the second run the dog was immediately free running covering the ground and the guns with pace and style before coming on point. When asked to produce the dog did so with no hesitation   and remained steady. The bird was shot and landed approx. 3 yards from the dog . A retrieve was duly completed with no fuss. This completed the dogs run.

Guns Award – Staffordshire King, Brittany Owned and Handled by Mrs E Carter.

Many thanks to my co judge Coshy Kimberley , the HVS for the invitation, the hosts for allowing a HPR Trial on a wonderful grouse moor and the guns for their patience and co-operation throughout the day.
